Noble Laureate Wangari Maathai to Deliver Lecture At AfDB

October 27, 2009, 10:00 am
Tunis, Tunisie
At the invitation of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group President, Nobel Laureate, Wangari Maathai, will deliver a lecture at the AfDB’s premises in Tunis, Tunisia, on the theme: “Natural Resource Management and Poverty Reduction: Strengthening the Links.” The lecture has been scheduled to take place on October 27, 2009, and its theme is motivated by the need to deepen current understanding of how good practice in the use of natural resources can promote rapid poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability and development, particularly in rural parts of Africa.

The theoretical expectation is that resource-rich economies are better placed to achieve rapid poverty reduction and economic transformation than their resource-poor counterparts. The reality, however, is that the performance of resource-rich African countries has been relatively poor and far lower than expected, with few exceptions. In many cases, the extraction and use of the resources has often led to increased poverty and considerable environmental degradation where the resources are located.

The seminar will provide an opportunity for rich exchanges on how this paradox can be reversed by addressing how some countries and communities succeed in harnessing their resources for poverty alleviation and economic growth, while others continue to be trapped in poverty in the midst of plenty.

The discussions will also review the relationships between resource endowment, national institutional and organizational capacities, participatory democracy, good governance as well as the roles and responsibilities of the local and international communities. Since its inception in 2006, the AfDB Eminent Speakers Programme has attracted 13 high-level speakers who have addressed over 3,000 participants. The seminars provide Bank staff, members of the diplomatic corps, staff of international organizations and Tunisian institutions of higher learning with unique opportunities to exchange views with renowned personalities and experts on challenges facing the continent as well as learn of achievements and opportunities.

The upcoming seminar to be addressed by the Nobel laureate will be no exception. Her distinction, passion for environmental protection, profound knowledge and experience on natural resources issues, particularly as they relate to eco-system sustenance, poverty alleviation, human rights, gender equity and peace in developing countries, make her the ideal person to deliver the 14th seminar of the Eminent Speakers Programme of the AfDB.

Prof. Wangari Maathai combines scientific knowledge, education, social commitment and active politics. More than simply protecting the existing environment, her strategy is to secure and strengthen the very basis for ecologically sustainable development. She founded the Green Belt Movement where, for nearly 30 years, she has mobilized Kenyans, particularly poor women to plant over 30 million trees. Her methods have been adopted by other countries as well.

Through education, community development, human rights protection, family planning, nutrition and the fight against corruption, the Green Belt Movement has paved the way for development at the grassroots level. Professor Maathai is a strong African voice speaking for the poor and the underprivileged, particularly women to ensure that their potential is realized and harnessed for the continent’s development. She is the first African woman to be honored with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. She is a role model and a source of inspiration for many across the globe who are involved in efforts at attaining sustainable development, alleviating poverty as well as fostering gender equity, democracy and peace.

Festival of Interdependence

October 24, 2009, 10:30 am
Bargehouse
South Bank
London
SE1 9PH
The Bigger Picture: Festival of Interdependence - a free one-day event at the Bargehouse on London's South Bank.

The event will be filled with inspiring speakers and creative activities
organised by nef in partnership with a range of partners.

Economic turmoil and social upheaval coupled with the threat of runaway
climate change have revealed major failings in the current system. In
response, nef has brought together a range of organisations and individuals
to share a vision of the world as it could be.

Collectively we already have many of the ideas, policies and resources that
can deliver greater human well-being and social justice within environmental
limits. But a huge shift is still needed to make change happen. We think
2009 will mark the start of that shift, and The Bigger Picture will allow us
all to see how we can be a part of the great transition to a new economy
with a mix of hope, creativity, practicality and fun.

Omega Institute, 150 Lake Drive, Rhinebeck, NY 12572. Registration 800-944-1001 or 845-266-4444.
Wangari Maathai will headline an all-star conference on women's power. Also speaking are: Jane Fonda, Eve Ensler, Anita Diamant, Maya Angelou, Carol Gilligan, Sally Field, and Kate Clinton.

From the conference program:
Humanity is still relying on outdated and destructive modes of acquiring and sharing power. In this century, women must play a primary role in reimagining and redefining power in all of its contexts—not only for the sake of women, but also for the well-being of all people, all cultures, and the earth itself. Through keynote talks, on-stage interviews, and workshops, we explore the nature and necessity of feminine power. We also take a bold look at the obstacles that mute the feminine voice and compel us to sell our souls to assume powerful positions in our work and in the world.

Enjoy readings, performances, conversations, celebration, movement, music, and the chance to be supported on your own journey. The energy generated at the Women and Power conferences is contagious; it inspires us to thrive in our chosen field, whether we are mothers, businesswomen, professionals, teachers, leaders, or activists.

The feminine voice lives in all of us; we invite women—and men—from different backgrounds, professions, races, ages, and nations to join us.
